Who we are
Peach Labs Inc makes Clearcut, the app and askclearcut.com. This page says what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. It covers the app and this website.
You do not need an account
Clearcut works without an account. Your preferences, scans and saved products then stay on your phone, and we never see them.
If you make an account
You sign in with an email link, with Apple or with Google. Your account keeps your email address and name, your preferences and settings, your saved products and the prices you watch, your scans, and the phones that get your notifications. That lets it follow you to a new phone.
Only you can read or change it in the app. To send a price-drop notification, our server reads which products you watch and which phones to notify. It does not copy them into our product database, which has no user IDs.
What the app asks our servers
To show a verdict, the app sends our API the barcode, link or words that you look up. The request carries no account and no name. It does carry a token that shows it comes from the real app.
The service provider that carries the connection to our API sees your IP address and the request. Our API uses the IP address only for a moment, to limit how fast one phone can ask, and stores neither the IP address nor what you asked.
When you share a link to a product that we do not have yet, we keep the link that you shared so that we can add the product, and a count of such links each day. We never keep who sent it.
Our servers hold products, prices and reviews from public pages. To decide which prices to check more often, we count how many people watch a product, never who.
Location
Only if you allow it, and only while you scan: the app reads your location to find the store that you are in. It sends the position to our API in the request. Our API answers with the store and does not store the position.
California law calls precise location sensitive personal information. We use it only for this, never to profile you or for ads. You can turn it off in You › Privacy & data, or pick the store yourself.
Camera and photos
The camera reads barcodes on your phone; the pictures do not leave it.
When we do not know a product, the app can take a photo of its front, of the ingredients list and of the barcode. Today those photos stay on your phone. If that changes, this page changes first.
Voice search
When you search by voice, your phone's own speech recognition (Apple's on iPhone, Google's on Android) turns what you say into words. It can send the audio to Apple or Google, under their privacy policies. We get only the words.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we keep a token for each of your phones so that we can tell you when a watched price drops. You can turn notifications off in You › Notifications or in your phone's settings.
Store links
A store link tells the store, and the affiliate network that pays our commission, that Clearcut sent you. On their sites they may use cookies and collect data under their own privacy policies. We learn that a purchase happened, so that we are paid; we do not get your name.
When you write to us
If you email us, we keep your message and your address to answer you, and delete them two years after the last message.
How long we keep data
On your phone: until you delete it. Auto-delete can remove old scans for you.
In your account: until you delete it, or the account. After you delete your account, we delete it from our servers within 30 days.
Your IP address, your position and what you look up: not stored by our API. Our service providers keep standard request logs for a short time, for security.
Emails to us: two years after the last message.
Your rights and choices
You can see and download your data (You › Privacy & data › Download all your data), correct it (You › Account › Edit), and delete it (You › Account › Delete account). Without an account, "Clear everything on this phone" deletes it all.
If you live in California, you also have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose; to delete it; to correct it; and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell or share personal information, as California law defines those words, so there is nothing to opt out of. We use sensitive personal information only to give you the service.
To use a right, use the app or write to . We check that the request is yours, for example by asking you to write from the email of your account, and we answer within 45 days. Someone you authorise can ask for you, with your written permission.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
We do not track you across other sites or apps, and this website sets no cookies. So a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal changes nothing here; we treat it as a request not to sell or share your data, which we do not do anyway.
Children
Clearcut is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you think a child has given us personal information, write to and we will delete it.
Security and where data is kept
Data travels encrypted, and only the people who run Clearcut can reach our servers. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your data, we tell you as the law requires.
We and our service providers process data in the United States.
Who helps us
Service providers run sign-in, account sync, notifications, the check that requests come from the real app on a real device, this website and the connection to our API. They handle your data only to run these services for us. If you sign in with Apple or Google, that company confirms who you are.
We do not sell data, and we do not share it for ads.
This website
askclearcut.com sets no cookies and has no analytics. Our hosting provider keeps standard request logs to run the site.
Changes to this policy
When this page changes, the date at the top changes. If a change is material, for example if we start to keep a new kind of data, the app tells you before the change applies.
